Classical rip-offs

Classical rip-offsMy way of paying homage to the Masters. During my transition from architect to painter, I copied eight paintings in the Louvre over a three year period, three months on each. It was, for me, like detective work, forensic analysis, a study of times and surfaces past. Meditation through painting.

I still revisit these masterworks, these first loves, only now I use them as a point of departure for my own work.  How much can be removed from the original icons and still preserve their identity?  How much can be added to them without alienating their personality?
